At Home on the Landing
For a while I’ve been writing from friends’ upstairs landing - that funny non-space of a space which isn’t a destination, lacks a specific purpose and yet is essential for rooms to ‘room’. It presents an imperfect but apposite metaphor for life - timelessly and ‘space-lessly’ being what it is (and isn’t).
Welcome. A huge comfy armchair offers a warm embrace. The view through dancing oak leaves to a clear blue sky is glorious.
All there is, is what is. THIS is ‘it’ - a bottomless landing, going nowhere, being no thing. Paradoxically, inevitably and wonder-fully ‘being at home’ is inevitable since there’s no other ‘place’ to be. ‘You’ don’t come into it since there is no ‘it’ and yet it is what you are (and aren’t!) There’s literally no ‘where’ to fall, no ‘how’ to fall, no need or possibility of ‘knowing how’. You’re already and forever falling and landing… PERFECTLY.
This is far too simple for words, too close than can be imagined and of no use to get ‘you’ anywhere...

‘Neverything’ [credit Tony Parsons] defies being any thing, yet includes being described as unconditional Love, an eternal orgasm beyond relating or ‘coming together’ — free, complete and full — yet as ordinary and insubstantial as paint cracking on a garden bench, grief pouring, a stomach rumbling, the smell of coffee, stories being told and even the illusion of there being something apparently ‘other’.
